What is sedation?

Sedation involves administering medications to induce a state of relaxation and drowsiness, which may range from mild to deep sedation.

Key Features of sedation include:

  • Consciousness: Patients remain conscious but experience reduced anxiety and discomfort.

  • Pain Management: Mild to moderate pain relief is often combined with local anaesthesia.

  • Amnesia: Some memory loss might occur, depending on the depth of sedation.

Types of Sedation:

  • Minimal Sedation: Patients are relaxed but fully conscious.

  • Moderate Sedation (Conscious Sedation): Patients are more deeply sedated but can respond to stimuli and follow instructions.

  • Deep Sedation: Patients are on the edge of consciousness, may need assistance to maintain their airway, and have limited ability to respond.

Sedation is used for minor surgeries, dental procedures, diagnostic tests, and procedures requiring patient cooperation and comfort.
